This talk will be primarily historical and will focus on Qasr Al Hosn and its evolution over time. Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest standing structure on Abu Dhabi Island and is one of the most historically significant buildings in the emirate. It represents an oasis of tradition and stability in a fast-changing and dynamic 21st century metropolis. Yet the fort’s own role has not been static since the first tower was constructed in the second half of the 18th century on Abu Dhabi Island. The structure then grew into an enclosed defensive fort and became the administrative seat of the emirate. In co-operation with Image Nation Abu Dhabi, a leading media and entertainment company, a five-part documentary series titled History of the Emirates will be screened at Al Hosn. The series showcases the UAE's history and heritage.
This talk will focus on the Abu Dhabi community who lived in and around Qasr Al Hosn. The life of the community flowed in and out of the fort, creating a rhythm of life marked by history. It was a place where the ruling family lived alongside the workers of the palace, such as guards, administrators, cooks, etc.). Qasr Al Hosn was also a place where people could come to seek justice or assistance in times of need.
